Frequently Asked Questions

Who can host?

Anyone with a private, safe, and comfortable space can apply to be a host. You must be at least 21 years old and pass a basic background check. Hosts will be asked to provide clear, accurate photos of their intended private lodging space & shared living spaces to our team upon request.

How do I sign up to be a host?

Fill out our online application, and we will follow up with next steps, including a brief phone screening and shared documents.

How many guests will I host?

Almost two-thirds of our patient families are traveling as a single spouse or family member (one person) while their loved one is in the hospital. Typically a patient family will need no more than 2 beds for their stay. If you are able to host more than one family member (or host children) please indicate this on your application.

Do I need to have a spare bedroom?

Yes, guests need a private space where they can rest & recover comfortably. A guest room, finished basement, or private area in your home is ideal. A private bathroom is not required, but please be sure to indicate “shared bathroom” on your application.

What do I need to provide for guests?

A clean, private sleeping space with basic necessities like bedding & towels, access to a bathroom, and (at minimum) a shared kitchen & living space.

Do I need to provide meals?

No, hosts are not required to provide food or meals. We do ask that you provide a small space for guests to store & prepare any personal food. Additional amenities (such as shampoo, laundry, meals, coffee, etc) are at your discretion when creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Can I host guests with medical needs?

Yes, but hosts are not expected to provide medical care. Guests must be independent or have a caregiver staying with them.

Will I be reimbursed?

No, this is a volunteer-based program. However, the impact of your generosity is invaluable to families in need of housing during medical care.

How long will guests stay? Do I get to pick my nights?

Guests are only permitted to stay in your home during the week of the NFL Draft (April 21-27, 2025) and their stay could range anywhere from 1-7 nights. We ask that you understand that medical need can be uncertain & may require flexibility and change. You are open to choose your preference of nights. All requests from a Guest to stay beyond the agreed-upon dates must be communicated with Altrusa Hospitality Staff. Any stay after April 27, 2025 is at the discretion of the Host and ends the contracted volunteer agreement & association with Altrusa Hospitality House’s Nights for Neighbors program.
